Luis Enrique has decided that the Brazilian should not be part of the team this season, so selling him is the only viable option.
The player is aware of the situation and on Tuesday, when he rejoins the squad, should already be evaluating his possible options on the transfer market.
Alves had previously stated that he wanted to stay at Barcelona and fulfil the final year of his contract.
He had not received any offers interesting enough to want to leave and was convinced he would still be useful for the team.
However Luis Enrique has dismissed this possibility.
The priority is to sign Fiorentina's Juan Manuel Cuadrado, a player of a similar profile, but much younger and who could help as the team is regenerated.
The coach understands it is time to replace players who have spent many years at the club and Alves is one of the players on that list.
Barcelona would like to have a solution by August 31 and will ask for Alves' cooperation.
The ideal formula will be a transfer where Barcelona would get a fair amount for the Brazilian, and he would still get to play top level football for one of the elite clubs.
However, big European sides have their right-back positions covered and do not seem willing to put a figure on the table for Alves.
The cost of Alves's sign-on fee and wages is another impediment as the club look for a transfer.
